PS2 still 'most-used' console in Japan

TGS survey puts Sony's old hardware above DS and PSP

A survey of visitors to the recent Tokyo Game Show has suggested that Sony's venerable PlayStation 2 remains Japan's most-used console.

70 per cent of the 1000 attendees questioned in an exit poll by the General Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) claimed to play on their PS2s. This was down from a high of 79 per cent in 2008.

The handhelds weren't far behind - DS at 68.7 per cent, with PSP hot on its heels at 68.6 per cent. The survey allowed multiple choices of frequently-used hardware.

Wii, PS3 and 360 managed 56.7, 47.7 and 19.6 per cent respectively.

Also surveyed was planned future console purchases, with 3DS and PS3 coming joint top at 31 per cent, followed by 360 at 23 per cent.

I'm sure there is a very important lesson to be learnt here...

Gameplay over graphics

Depth over substance

Quality over quantity

The list could go on and...

Considering these percentages, the poll must have surely asked, "Which consoles do you own/use?" rather than "Which console do you use above and beyond other gaming hardware?"

Given that this month alone I've bought seven imports and three US games for my own PS2's, yeah, I can believe those numbers. I have all the current consoles, but there are times when my PS2 and original Xbox get played more than my PS3 or 360, Of course, with so many games to review lately, any PS2 stuff I pick up is getting shifted to the play stack under actual work...

The survey doesn't suggest ps2 is the most used console in japan, it suggests it is the most used console by people prepared to answer surveys at the Tokyo Game show instead of checking out new games.

While I have a Wii and PS3 I still use my PS2 a lot - there are just games that I want to go back and play again. While the graphics may look budget now but some of the games were just a blast to play. Same with my Cube. I still use my Cube a lot and I just finished RE2 again on my N64. So it is really a matter of games on the consoles.

The PS2 was really huge even going back to it's hype in 2000, I believe that the same was also said about the NES and SNES or over there it was the Famicom and the Super Famicom systems that were most used in Japan around the mid to late 90's.

The PS2 was the machine that broke and killed off SEGA's legendary and last ever created console that was the Dreamcast... Sad days indeed...

...Goes off and digs out a Dreamcast and a buncha games, good times! :)
