EA claims FIFA 11 is fastest selling sports title ever

Publisher estimates 2.6 million units sold in Europe and North America in first week

FIFA 11, which claimed top-spot in the UK chart this week, is the fastest selling sports title ever, according to publisher EA.

The game sold 2.6 million copies in Europe and North America during its first week on the shelves, EA's internal estimates report.

The publisher also estimates that the game has grossed more than $150 million (£94.8m) at retail since its release on September 28. Over 11.3 million game hours of FIFA 11 were logged online in the two days following the game's release, making it the busiest in EA Sports' online history.

To accompany the figures, EA announced that FIFA 11 Ultimate Team, an alternative strategic game mode for the title, will be released for free on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this November.

"This is a landmark achievement for EA Sports," said president Peter Moore.

"We've shattered sales records at retail, critics are praising FIFA 11 as being one of the most authentic and innovative titles ever, and fans are connecting and competing with other gamers around the world and have logged a record number of online connected game sessions."
