Mafia II leads UK chart for third consecutive week

Nintendo's Metroid: Other M almost disappears from top 40 in second week of release

2K Czech's crime shooter Mafia II has retained its spot at the top of the UK all-format chart for the third week of its release, holding off a surge from last week's biggest new entry HAWX 2, which climbed eight places from tenth place to second, boosted by the release of the PlayStation 3 SKU.

Square Enix held on to a top three spot with Kane & Lynch 2, which slipped one place from last week's number two. Sixth, seventh and eighth places on the chart were taken by new entries this week, as Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Kindom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and R.U.S.E. all hit the top ten in their opening weeks.

Nintendo's Metroid: Other M, which only managed 12th place on release last week, despite a high-profile marketing campaign, slipped all the way to 40th place in the chart.

I haven't played Metroid: Other M yet, but based on consumer feedback I've read, it certainly sounds like the most divisive in the series to date.

Elsewhere, glad to see a few new games do well in the charts, after what seems like months of the same games holding the top spots. Is this the first time - or surely one of the first times - Just Dance has slipped out the top 10 since its release?

Metroid has never been a big seller in Europe. It usually ranges from 25% to 10% of the American total.

Strange didn`t see Ruse in store when I looked last Friday at Game.

Well for next week we all know that Mafia 2 isn`t going to be first place anymore and will be replaced by Halo: Reach. Curious to see how the move titles will do.
