Analyst: 20-25% increase in December software sales

Ahead of December NPD data to be released later this week, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian estimates a 20 to 25% increase in software sales

Ahead of December NPD data to be released later this week, Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian estimates a 20 to 25% increase in software sales.

Sebastian continues to highlight Guitar Hero III, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Assassinâs Creed, Rock Band and Super Mario Galaxy as the top selling games over the holiday period.

Better than expected videogame sales in 2007 will create a more difficult growth comparison in 2008, but he nevertheless expects another solid growth year thanks to upcoming titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV, Spore and Metal Gear Solid 4.

Sebastian also notes that, historically, industry sales are more closely tied to cyclical growth drivers than the overall economy. In 2008, the Xbox 360 will have been on the market for three years; the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS3 will have been available for two years.

Lazard Capital Markets is currently taking a "Buy" position on Activision, Electronic Arts and THQ.

NPD US sales data for the month of December is expected later this week.
