March 24, 2009 - At least once a year for the past 4 years amateur game developers have challenged themselves to write a game in only 7 days using the classic role-playing game “Rogue” as a model. This year the 7 Day RogueLike (7DRL) challenge produced an historic 28 games for you to play, all freely downloadable. Which one’s are good? Which ones are bad? Which ones aren’t worth your time? Cymon’s Games ( www.cymonsgames.com) is here help.
For the uninitiated a roguelike game is a game inspired by other roguelike games. Originally roguelike’s were texbased role-playing games. However as time progressed the definition of a roguelike broadened. Now you can generally expect that they’re text based games, but not always. You can also generally expect they’re D&D type cRPGs, but not always. Generally they employ line of sight or area of sight mechanics, but not always. Sometimes they’re painfully difficult or sometimes they’re perfect for killing 5 minutes of a coffee break. The genre has gotten rather broad, as can be illustrated by the wide range of entries in this years 7DRL challenge. Chances are there’s something there that everyone will enjoy.
7DRL challenge isn’t a competition, but Cymon’s Games will be voting on Best of Show, Best Visual Presentation, and Technical Merit. Polls will be open to the last day of April. 2009 7DRL reviews and polls are at http://www.cymonsgames.com/7DRL-reviews/
