3D Realms shuts down Duke Nukem based mod project

Developer 3D Realms has stepped in to stop work on an amateur mod for Half-Life 2 which aimed to recreate classic first person shooter Duke Nukem 3D using the engine of Valve's latest hit PC title.

Fans working on the mod were informed by the company that it does not allow any of its intellectual property to be used in conversions or mods for other game engines, forcing the project to be shut down.

3D Realms itself is still working on Duke Nukem Forever, the long delayed sequel to Duke Nukem 3D, which is expected to be present at E3 this year in some form - although previous E3 showings a few years ago came to nothing when the project switched engine, and 3D Realms still refuses to commit to any release date for the title.
