THE ROLE The Studio Technical Director provides technical direction, strategy and guidance to the studio head and the studio’s teams. The studio TD is actively involved in building strong development programming teams, taking direct responsibility for mentoring and recruitment. They are also responsible for establishing the processes and best practises for the studio’s technical teams, as well as overseeing technical plans and designs at both product (i.e. game) and studio-wide technology (i.e. engine architecture) levels. Additionally, the Studio TD acts in an internal quality role: at both a technical and product level and at all stages of product development. Essential Functions:- Studio * Supports Studio Head in all areas of strategic development. * Responsible for technical strategy planning supporting studio business goals. * Provide sales support for studio pitches and sales meetings (e.g. initial project time estimates, suggesting high level technical solutions). * Undertake due-diligence on sub-contractors, outsourcers, etc. * Maintain and nurture relationship with key technical partners (e.g. platform owners, publisher technical directors, middleware providers, etc.) Product Development * Provides guidance and advice on all technical aspects of project development and drives the major architectural decisions of the studio’s projects (i.e. games, shared/engine technology, etc.) * Acts as technical and quality audit at all stages of development from pitch preparation through to gold master. * Define best practices and standards, and ensure they are in use in all products throughout their lifecycle. * Undertake ongoing review of all technical areas of project development – continually detects technical risks and works with teams and Studio Head to resolve. * Ensures that the best reuse of technology is made, both from other projects within the studio and from elsewhere in the company (e.g. central Tools and Technology team). Staff Management * Defines the technical interview process for the studio, including taking part in 2nd interviews, to ensure quality and consistency in approach and results. * Assist technical team leads to build and develop their teams, and for senior technical staff take part in mentoring and making recommendations for career development, training, and team structure/composition. * Responsible for planning and building a strong set of core teams, in liaison with the technical team leads.
