Second Life is a 3D virtual world entirely created by its Residents (people like you) that's bursting with entertainment, experiences, and opportunity. The company behind it, Linden Lab, was founded in 1999 to create a revolutionary new form of shared experience. The Second Life Grid provides the platform where Second Life resides and offers the tools for business, educators, nonprofits, and entrepreneurs to develop a virtual presence. Headquartered in San Francisco, Linden Lab has over 200 employees spread across the globe and they are now growing their European Studio based in Brighton, UK.

Overview:

Linden Lab is looking for a web developer to help us bring Second Life and the Web closer together. We need someone who can craft order from chaos, make it scale, and give it several nines of reliability. You should know which technologies work, which ones wear out pagers, and which two technologies you should never, ever use together. And you should be the type of person who is still fun to work with even when then entire network is melting down.

Responsibilities:

- Develop extensible architecture and framework for websites.
- Develop compelling web services for use by the Second Life community.
- Customize, compile, install, configure, monitor and debug Apache server instances.
- Help design processes for more efficient content management, including staging and development environments.
- Design tools to streamline and robustly deploy new systems.
- Troubleshoot issues with web server, database, security, network, and web technologies.
- Create and enhance in-house tools to manage web site operations.
- Write new reporting, maintenance, and test automation tools in PHP and Perl.

Qualifications:

- 1 - 3 years developing multi-tier e-commerce or subscriber/community websites.
- Expert level PHP, JavaScript, DOM, XML, Apache, and SQL.
- Expert level object-oriented programming and MVC design.
- Must thrive in multi-tasking, quick moving, distributed thinking environment.
- Shell scripting on Linux or other POSIX system strongly preferred (bash, csh, or other).
- Demonstrated ability to schedule and meet deadlines.
- Computer Science degree strongly preferred.
- Minimum 3 - 5 years overall development experience.
- Proficiency with C++ a plus.
- Knowledge of payment processing a plus.
- Previous start-up experience a plus.
- Must possess high level of enthusiasm and be a strong team player.
- Understanding of entertainment industry, gaming and social networking communities a plus.
