Job Description Our client is a leading developer of 3D immersive simulations and educational games for global clients in training and education. Their success is based upon the development and application of unique learning technologies and they are rapidly expanding their market and geographical reach.

We require an experienced Development Manager to join the team to lead technology and product development.

This role reports directly into our clients Executive Board. Technical strategy and implementation is driven by and led by the Technology Development Manager. The role requires an experienced development manager with a strong software development background and ability to present to board level. Although strong technically, the Technology Development Manager will not be an expert in all areas. The role assembles and shapes technical requirements by drawing on the technical and market expertise available within the business, its advisors and its customers.

The Technology Development Manager then manages process and resources to deliver the technical requirements to the right timelines and quality standards.

Responsibilities

• To be responsible for delivering high quality development output to internal and external customers
• Technical strategy – Define pre-emptive development projects to remain ahead of competitors, preserve the leading edge.
• Chair the technical forum through which we assess architecture, technical strategy, functionality and devise approaches to solve complex problems
• Technical Roadmap – Assess the technical implications of incoming feature requests; prioritise development of new features and product releases; lead the design and implementation
• Effectively manage the operational development processes in an Agile environment
• Manage the development team on a daily basis, ensure they have clear focus, direction and resources they need to do the best job
• To manage and appraise all Development personnel through continuous professional development
• Work with the Studio Director to ensure resources are optimised across technology development and application delivery
• Technical expert and referee – interact with developers to advise on the “best way” to approach certain aspects of code and design strategy
• Manage workflow and quality of external development teams
• Quality assurance – design and implement automated testing regime and best practice processes to ensure low error high stability technical environment


Skills and Experience

• Proven track record in the management of Software Development processes and personnel, preferably in a Product environment
• Experienced project manager using both Prince2 and Agile methodologies (Scrum and XP) and skilled in business analysis, requirements definition, and business process re-engineering and delivering solutions on time and within budgets
• Experience in working with teams in multiple locations; including outsourced teams
• Hands on Quality Assurance experience with knowledge of both automated and manual testing techniques. Understand how to drive the testing a software product and organising the quality review of a management product.
• Strong leadership and motivation skills
• Previous budgetary and P&L account responsibility
• Degree in IT or related subject

Location – the role is office based in Sunderland. The job will require travel in the UK and abroad to work with clients, advisors and outsourcing teams.
