Zune sells 2 million units

Microsoft has revealed that its Zune player has sold two million units since the MP3 player's launch in 2006, showing a flatter than expected growth, according to an electronista report.

The sales, although lower than predicted, have increased Microsoft's North American market share from 3 per cent to 4 per cent. Part of the slow sales growth has been attributed to the general US economic slow down, which some believe has hit the MP3 player market.

Apple, however, sold 10.6 million units in the last quarter alone, more than five times Microsoft's cumulative sales to date.

At last year's GDC, Microsoft revealed ongoing plans for the Zune, including plans to use the MP3 player as a cross-platform gaming option with titles available on the XBLA service.
