World of Warcraft continues to drive Activision forward

Blizzard MMO brings in a third of company's overall revenues for the quarter

Blizzard Entertainment's all-conquering MMO title, World of Warcraft, continued to be the primary driver in Activision Blizzard's financial results for the three months to the end of June.

The title pulled in USD 324 million for the quarter, amounting to 31 per cent of the overall publisher's revenue, bringing it up to USD 638 million (or 32 per cent) for the first half of the financial year.

It's worth noting that both of those figures don't include any specific revenue streams arising from expansions, while income from the hiatus in China is likely to have brought the figure down slightly.

While the release of Guitar Hero 5 in the next quarter and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in October is sure to provide strong internal competition, it means that World of Warcraft is firmly on track to total over USD 1.2 billion for the year.

The publisher also confirmed the long-held belief that StarCraft II is being pushed back to 2010 " to coincide with the relaunch of its upgraded Battle.net online gaming service," read a statement.
