Videogames can "defy UK economic downturn"

Enda Carey, head of games and digital content at Northwest Vision and Media, has said that he believes the videogame industry can buck the current economic downturn in the UK because people tend to go out less - and so games are a good option.

"It's my view that gaming is something that actually grows during recessionary times," he told the Liverpool Daily Post. "People tend to stay in more rather than go out and do things. Games are one of the best ways to spend a lot of time."

He also added that he believes that smaller companies will see a rising importance in partnering with other companies in order to be able to compete with the big-hitters.

"The industry is changing," he said. "We're starting to see a lot more collaboration across sectors. We want to get people used to collaboration and getting out of their comfort zones.

Carey, who worked previously at Sony's Liverpool studio for three years, underlined NVM's commitment to the gaming community.

"Having been based in Liverpool, I know how creative the North West is and the opportunity to help nurture this talent within the game and digital industries is what attracted me to the role.

"Northwest Vision and Media recognises the tremendous prosperity and growth of the digital sector, and together we want to show what a great region this is."
