Valve confirms Steam for Mac release date

Digital service will launch to the public on May 12

Valve has announced a release date of May 12 for the Mac version of its digital download service Steam.

A version of Steam for the Mac was confirmed earlier this year, and beta testing has been taking place since the end of March.

Valve has said that among the features that will be offered are Steam Play, which works in combination with Steam Cloud to allow gamers to play on a PC then pick up the game where they left off on a Mac - provided the game is available on both formats.

Mac updates will also appear alongside their Windows counterparts, while Mac and Windows users will be part of the same multiplayer universe, so will be able to play together on the same servers and from the same lobbies.

The news comes shortly after Valve's launch of a new Steam Client UI for PC at the end of April.
