THQ licenses Unreal Engine 3 for PC and next-gen

Joins long list of licensees including BioWare, Atari and Midway

THQ has licensed Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 technology for use in future games on both next-generation game consoles and Windows PCs.

"Unreal Engine 3 is widely regarded as a premier next-generation engine technology. We plan to complement our own proprietary engines with the Unreal Engine technology to create truly innovative gameplay experiences," said worldwide studios executive vice president Jack Sorensen.

Unreal Engine 3 has already been licensed by a number of next-generation game developers and publishers, including BioWare, Midway, Gearbox Software, Atari, Buena Vista Games, 10TACLE and more.

The technology is available for use on PlayStation 3, for which it was demonstrated at last E3's console unveiling in Los Angeles, and Xbox 360, upon which Epic is currently developing its own project, Gears of War. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz recently, Epic vice president Mark Rein said that the company would consider supporting Nintendo Revolution if the demand was there.

"In the past few years, THQ has built one of the strongest development organizations in the industry," said Rein in a statement to mark the THQ announcement. "We're thrilled that their teams will be utilising Unreal Engine 3 in some of their upcoming projects. We can't wait to see what our technology will enable in their future releases."
