Sony extends peripherals licensing business

Manufacturers invited to create new PSP, PlayStation 3 and PS2 controllers

Sony is extending its official peripherals licensing business, inviting manufacturers to create new controllers for the PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.

Joining the program will give manufacturers access to technical documents for all three consoles, as well as allowing products to sport an official licensed logo.

At E3 this year Sony revealed an early prototype of its new PlayStation 3 wand, a motion sensing controller for the home console, which simulated multiple uses, from archery and shooting to dragging and dropping on-screen items.

The peripherals business has been central to the current generation of game consoles, with consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and the music genre as a whole pushing the acceptance of new methods of playing games.
