Sony confirms Skype for PSP
Slim PSP, wireless Internet connection required
Sony Computer Entertainment has announced that it will introduce Skype features to the new slim PSP.
More than 246 million members are registered for the use of this communications software, which enables users to communicate with other Skype users around the world over the Internet free of charge.
PSP users worldwide will be able to start using Skype features and services through a simple system software update scheduled in late January. Services include free voice calls between Skype users, contact list management, SkypeOut - allowing users to make calls to landlines and mobile phones - and optional SkypeIn - allowing users to receive Skype calls from landlines and mobile phones for a fee.
A Memory Stick Duo, wireless Internet connection, and Skype-compatible audio input device are required to use the service.
SCEI said that it will "deploy various measures to meet users' demand and vigorously promote the expansion of the PSP platform as a handheld entertainment system to enjoy a variety of interactive digital entertainment."
No other specifics were provided, and the company did not explain how Skype will fit in with previously announced plans for the PSP's European Go! Messenger service developed in conjunction with BT.
