Second week on top for Pokemon Ranger 3 in Japan

Plenty of new entries but few sales as the PSP edges out the DS in hardware sales

A slow week of sales has seen Pokemon Ranger: Tracks of Light on the Nintendo DS remain at the number one spot for a second week, as DS and PSP hardware sales go neck and neck.

The third in the Pokemon Ranger spin-off series sold 63,355 units in its second week, for a lifetime total so far of 100,306. The rest of the top three was composed of even older titles, with Friend Collection for the DS at number two and New Super Mario Bros. Wii at number three.

The highest new entry of the week is what would be known in the West as What Did I Do To Deserve This, My Lord? 3D (previously Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! 3D). Sony's cult real-time strategy sold 33,920 units on the PSP.

New at number five is Tecmo Koei's Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce 2 on PSP, with 31,674 unit sales. This represents a considerable drop from the previous game, which debuted at number two in March 2009, with 219,000 units sold.

The final new PSP game of the week is Nippon Ichi's Zettai Hero Kaizou Keikaku at number six, with 31,447 units sold. A burlesque role-playing game featuring the developer's trademark humour, the title roughly translates as "Absolute Hero Modding Project".

The only HD title in the top ten is the PlayStation 3 version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 at number seven. A blockbuster in the West, the game enjoyed a debut of only 28,353 units in Japan.

The last new entry to make the top ten is RPG Maker DS, the first in the series for Nintendo's portable but only a minor hit with 23,766 units sold.

In terms of hardware sales the PSP has seen a considerable drop from the previous week, when a new console colour was released. However, the large number of new releases has seen it remain the number one seller - albeit by the smallest of margins.

Overall PSP sales (including 1,191 units of the PSPgo) fell by almost 26,000 units to 40,316. By contrast the Nintendo DS dropped by around 4,000 units to a total of 39,105 (DSi XL: 21,604, DSi: 13,581, DS Lite: 3,920).

Wii sales were down by a similar amount to 31,460, while PS3 sales fell only slightly less to 26,481. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 sales were almost unchanged, at 2,668 and 1,825 units, respectively.
