The PlayStation 3 increased its global market share to 31 per cent in the first quarter of the year, up significantly from 18 per cent during the same period the previous year.

That's according to a new report by Strategy Analytics, which notes that for the first quarter the Wii's global market share stood at 49 per cent, and the Xbox 360 a 20 per cent share.

PlayStation 3 sales reached 2.2 million during the quarter, said the report, while Xbox 360 sold 1.5 million and the Wii 3.5 million.

"The PS3 continues to benefit from the price cut last September," noted David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics. "This should help the PS3 maintain growth momentum throughout 2010."

The report predicts the PlayStation 3 will sell 14 million units throughout 2010, compared to 17.5 million Wii units and 10.5 million Xbox 360s.

In an interview on the official PlayStation site this week, Sony's European president Andrew House said that dropping the PS3 price last September had propelled sales of the console at retail.

"From a business point of view, I have to say that the stand out moment for me has to be the launch of PS3 slim at 299 euros in September 2009," he said. "We know that for a long time, PS3 was expensive and therefore holding people back. When we launched the slim PS3, sales exploded and haven’t really slowed down since."

Uncertainties for the year include the introduction of Move and Natal, said the report, as well as the extent and pace of declining Wii sales.

Strategy Analytics estimated total home console sales will drop by 9 per cent in 2010, although it suggested Microsoft's Project Natal could help the Xbox 360 pick up towards the end of the year.

"The introduction of the Natal technology should also help re-energise Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform in the second half of the year," said Mercer.

"...compared to 17.5 million Wii units and 10.5 million Xbox 360's"

You've got a rogue apostrophe in there, GI.

Interesting story, although the PS3's market share must have been helped by GoWIII as well, and with an Xbox 360 Slim very likely due later this year, its sales too will probably spike as a result.

With the PS3 and 360 being so similar in terms of market share, it will be interesting to see how the rest of this generation will play out, both in terms of software and hardware - not to mention the success of Natal and Move.

I wonder if the recent numbers indicating that a large number of consumers buy the PS3 for Blu-Ray playback rather than gaming will push Microsoft into releasing a BD-capable 360 Slim unit. Games should probably be limited to run from dvds so the market isn't divided, but the ability to play back HD discs from a quiet 360 would certainly mean I'd be lining up to buy two more myself.

Don`t think many people buy the PS3 for Blu Ray instead of gaming since decent Blu Ray players run at the moment already at 100-150. With MS pushing online movies via netflix I don`t think they are to eager to support Blu Ray. I just don`t see MS saying that Blu Ray with be right format for HD movies after they where supporting HD-DVD.

As HDTV become cheaper and 3D looking like the new benchmark the PS3 is the entertainment device of choice.

360 only has its LIVE service that makes it of a higher quality. The system, integration of software and with a proper digital HDMI out, means any tech head should and does buy PS3's.

Plus the PS brand is so strong, the more the system drops in price the more competitive the PS3 is.

Several big game releases have helped the PS3 maintain momentum since the Slim/price cut last year.

Are they not aware that sales are up YoY for the calendar year?

"Are they not aware that sales are up YoY for the calendar year?"

Jim, as we both know facts rarely get in the way of a good spin job in this industry, especially as it pertains to the Wii and, by extension, Nintendo.

So far this year in every month the sales are slightly down compared to last year for the Wii world wide.

I'm showing a mild increase.

I'll grant slower sales in the US but when Gamestop says they are sold out of Wii 50% of the time, kinda hard to be up YoY.

Are Strategy Analytics even considering that? Somehow I'm unsure that they are and they don't have a very good track record of forecasting Wii sales (or any of the 3 consoles) to begin with.
