PlayStation phone rumours resurface

Report suggests product could launch in 2009 with PSP functions

Reports that Sony is to launch a PlayStation-branded phone have once again resurfaced, with suggestions that a product could launch as soon as Christmas 2009.

According to sources talking to Marketing Week, such a device would incorporate functions of the PlayStation Portable.

Sony would likely develop the hardware itself, after its relationship with mobile phone partner Sony Ericsson has grown "frosty", said the report.

Sony Ericsson currently manufactures a number of phone handsets incorporating Sony's Walkman and Cybershot brands.

Rumours of a PlayStation phone gained some momentum in November 2007, followings musings from a Sony exec that such a device would be "plausible".

But Sony was quick to crush any talk of a PS Phone, and that the company was not working with Sony Ericsson on any such device.

The PlayStation Portable already uses a number of communication features, including Skype functionality. The Go! Messenger package allows users to send voice, video and instant messages via a collaboration with BT in Europe.
