Nintendo platforms dominate US hardware sales

Nintendo has completely sidelined its rivals in terms of US hardware sales in July, according to the latest data from NPD.

The Nintendo DS sold over 608,000 units across the month, while the Wii shifted 555,000 units.

Sony's PlayStation 3 was the third most popular console, selling 225,000 units, while the PlayStation Portable shifted 222,000 units.

That meant that the Xbox 360 was relegated to fifth place on the hardware chart selling 205,000 units - despite Microsoft cutting the price of the console and the Xbox 360 taking the most popular software title for the month with NCAA Football 2009.

The PlayStation 2 sold 155,000 units across the month, which in all totalled sales of USD 447 million - up 17 per cent on July 2007. In addition accessories added a further USD 149 million to the total.

By manufacturer, Nintendo sold 1.16 million consoles, followed by Sony on 602,000 and Microsoft on 205,000.

The US July 2008 hardware breakdown is as follows:

  • 1. Nintendo DS: 608,000
  • 2. Nintendo Wii: 555,000
  • 3. PlayStation 3: 225,000
  • 4. PlayStation Portable: 222,000
  • 5. Xbox 360: 205,000
  • 6. PlayStation 2: 155,000
