Mario Galaxy 2 back on top in Japanese charts

Slow week for sales also sees Ghost Trick and Art Academy creep into top three

A very slow week of sales in Japan has seen Super Mario Galaxy 2 return to the top of the charts, for its third non-consecutive week at the top. The game sold only 53,000 units to reach the number one position though, for a lifetime total in Japan of 572,000.

The highest new entry of the week was Capcom's Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective on the Nintendo DS, a new intellectual property from the creator of Ace Attorney which made its Western debut at E3 last week. Even at number two in the chart though it sold only 24,000 units.

The second highest new entry, at number three, is art package Art Academy from Nintendo, versions of which have already been sold as DSiWare in the West. The DS title sold 21,000 units in its first week.

Namco Bandai's Tamagotchi no Pichi Pichi Omisecchi on DS is another new entry at number six. The game is a follow-up to what is known in the West as the Tamagotchi Connexion: Corner Shop series, the first of which was the first third party title to pass one million sales on the DS. This latest game though has sold only 17,000 units in its first week.

The final new entry of the week is Idea Factory's samurai-themed visual novel Hakuoki: Junsouroku for the PlayStation 3. Aimed purely at a Japanese audience, the game sold just 13,000 units at number ten.

The Media Create Japanese software chart for the week ending June 20 is as follows:

  • 01 Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Wii)
  • 02 Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective (DS)
