Konami's Q1 buoyant on MGS 4 sales
Konami Corporation has announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2008 - the three months ending June 30 - with the headline news that revenues in its digital entertainment business rose over 2007 by 29 per cent, from JPY 34.9 billion (USD 322 million) to JPY 44.8 billion (USD 413 million).
Operating income was also up for that business segment, by 59 per cent, from JPY 8.3 billion (USD 76.6 million) to JPY 13.2 billion (USD 121.8 million).
The rise in fortunes was down primarily to the successful global release of Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PlayStation 3 in June - which shipped 3 million units on its first day on sale, but also contributing were "steady sales" of sports and music content according to the company, no doubt with Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 playing a role.
Overall, with Konami's other business interests - including its range of 337 fitness facilities and various arcade machine assets - the corporation took JPY 70.8 billion (USD 653 million) across the three months - a rise year-on-year of 17 per cent - while operating income hit JPY 11.6 billion (USD 107 million) - a rise of 66 per cent over the previous year.
The company will release the next instalment in the Pro Evolution Soccer series before the end of this year.
