Koei expansion incorporates new PSP development

Dynasty Warriors creator ramps up for Sony's forthcoming handheld

Japanese publisher Koei, best known as the company behind the popular Dynasty Warriors series of games, is set to begin production of titles for the PlayStation Portable as part of an ambitious expansion plan.

Speaking at a shareholders meeting earlier this week, the company's president Kiyoshi Komatsu stated that "I believe Sony's PSP will be profitable and we plan to support the platform with three software titles at launch next year."

The move comes as part of Koei's drive to expand its global development capabilities, with the company investing heavily in the opening of new studios in Singapore and Canada over the coming year.

Expanding on the PSP launch titles, Komatsu-san explained that while one of the games will be exclusively for the Japanese market, two others will be designed with the worldwide market in mind - although he would not be drawn on whether one of those titles might be an extension of the Dynasty Warriors franchise.

"We plan to deliver games with mass-market appeal for the PSP, just like our original strategy for the PlayStation 2," he concluded. Koei joins a growing band of companies believed to be working on, or planning for, Sony's forthcoming handheld, including western publishers Electronic Arts, Activision and Take 2.
