In-house development will boost creativity - Vivendi

Vivendi is striving to bring back the creativity that's lacking from the industry, European EVP, Adam Roberts, telling GamesIndustry.biz that bringing development in-house will help.

Vivendi is striving to bring back the creativity that's lacking from the industry, European EVP, Adam Roberts, telling GamesIndustry.biz that bringing development in-house will help.

In his guest editorial, Roberts stresses the importance of balancing financial pressures with the wants and needs of the market, ensuring that creativity and originality is not overlooked in the process.

"With the decline of independent studios, and the disturbing reality of watching competitive publishers struggle to keep afloat, it becomes almost inevitable that any new IP which enters a creative environment is steeped in uncertainty and fear," Roberts states.

"Itâs my sincere hope that - as more publishers such as ourselves bring development in-house - weâll increasingly see a change in this culture of limitation."

Roberts wants to see more risks taken with IP, rather than opting for the 'safe' sequel or limited use of a license which has plagued the industry over the past few years and could, if not corrected, transfer into the next generation of consoles.

"What we want to achieve, as a company moving forward, is a unification of critical acclaim and popular appeal," he concludes.
