Handhelds lead hardware sales in Japan

But console performance down across all formats

The Nintendo DS and Sony's PSP are leading hardware sales in Japan, although sales for all consoles are down across the region.

According to the latest data from Media Create for the week ended Jan 27, the DS sold 79,370 units compared to 88,575 in the previous week, while Sony's PSP saw sales of 77,933, down from 79,923.

The Wii is still streets ahead of its home console competitors in the region, with 74,544 units sold. Sony's PlayStation 3 is its closest rival, shifting 34,363 units, and the PS2 selling 11,364 units.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 continues to experience poor sales in the region with just 4,296 units sold.
