Gears of War 2 announcement "complete nonsense" - Rein

Epic boss shoots down speculation prompted by US magazine cover

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, has slammed rumours that a sequel to Gears of War 2 has been revealed to US consumer magazine GamePro.

The latest issue of the magazine features a mocked-up Gears of War 2 logo on the cover, prompting speculation that Epic is due to officially unveil a sequel to the best-selling Xbox 360 shooter.

"It is complete nonsense," said Rein in a post on the Gears of War forums.

"We have not announced a sequel to Gears of War to GamePro or anyone else for that matter."

The rumour mill has gone into overdrive since the magazine cover appeared on the internet, with many expecting a big reveal at this month's Game Developers Conference.

Supposed 'evidence' that Epic will show off a sequel is that the company has a large booth at the show, rivalled only by Microsoft, but Rein has told our sister site Eurogamer.net that GDC 2008 is "the show where we sell our engine not our games."
