Free Xbox 360 cross-platform multiplayer is temporary, says Microsoft

Microsoft has confirmed rumours that it is offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360 and PC titles that support crossover play, but say the move is only temporary.

There had been rumours on Xbox.com's forums that Microsoft would allow free cross-platform play on its console due to the fact that Windows Live is now a free service. However, Microsoft has revealed that it is in fact only a temporary promotional offer.

"Last week we announced that we were taking off the Gold-only restriction for multiplayer gaming over Games for Windows- Live. For a limited time, we are offering free online multiplayer on Xbox 360/Games for Windows titles that offer Live cross platform play," wrote a spokesperson.

Gamers since found they were able to play Shadowrun, Lost Planet and Universe at War on Xbox Live Silver accounts.

"This promotion won't last, so we encourage everyone to take advantage of it while they can."
