Folding@home project hits 1 million users
3000 users registering every day, says Sony
Sony has announced that the Folding@home project as registered over one million users since March 2007.
The project, which helps Stanford University research and better understand diseases ranging from Alzheimer's to cancer, has benefited from roughly 3000 new users registering their PlayStation 3's per day, or two users every minute, worldwide.
"Since partnering with SCEI, we have seen our research capabilities increase by leaps and bounds through the continued participation of Folding@home users," commented Vijay Pande, associate professor of chemistry at Stanford University.
"Now we have over one million PS3 users registered for Folding@home, allowing us to address questions previously considered impossible to tackle computationally, with the goal of finding cures to some of the worldâs most life-threatening diseases.
"We are grateful for the extraordinary worldwide participation by PS3 and PC users around the globe," he added.
