Sony today releases its first batch of 3D PlayStation 3 games on the PlayStation Network, in a bid to be the first home console format to support 3D entertainment in the living room.

Three games are initially available, Wipeout 3D, Pain and Super Stardust 3D, along with a demo of Evolution's MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. The games will cost £23.99 in the UK, or come free with a Bravia TV offer.

"PlayStation has always been about outstanding entertainment," offered SCEE president Andrew House. "The stereoscopic 3D Collection showcases the depth of technology behind PS3 and gives us a feel for the potential for future releases."

"Stereoscopic 3D technology coupled with the likes of PlayStation Move motion controller allows us to create an ever more compelling, realistic and immersive experience. Add to that our online capabilities, community interaction features, our film and music services and you’ve got a very exciting proposition for the future of home entertainment," he added.

Those that already own the games can download a free patch via the PlayStation Network to upgrade them to 3D, and support for 3D Blu-ray movies on the console is expected later this year.

Sony is hosting a press event in London today to highlight its 3D offerings across movies, TV and games, and will be showing off more 3D games at E3 next week.

I'm interested in the tech and I have all those games bar Pain, but there's no way I'm making the upgrade to 3D TVs any time soon. Maybe when they're about a quarter of their current price in a few years!

After trying both passive and active 3D on home TVs, I am less than convinced about Sony's choice of active shutter technology, which is not only a strain on the eyes but more importantly makes the screen unwatchable to anyone but viewers with shutter spectacles, which are quite bulky and are not an option to the unfortunates like myself who already wear glasses.

VHS, Betamax, DAT, MD, CD, DVD, DVD-HD, BRD... and now Polar Vs Shutter. At least the tech industry never gets boring.

Wipeout and Super Stardust would be great in 3D

If a Re-release of Rez HD came out in 3D I would be a very happy chappy.

Edit: Actually the more I think about Rez HD in 3D the more I dawns on me that the title was born for it.

Lets watch this space 1 year hence. Perhaps it will be in a more accessible agreeable public format thence.
