EA Sports launches 2009 Challenge Series

Publisher teams with Major League Gaming for $170,000 prize fund in US

Electronic Arts has announced the launch of the 2009 Challenge Series, a live and online competition for North America that will see USD 170,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs.

The publisher has teamed up with Major League Gaming and Best Buy, who will run the online and live events respectively, with additional support from SCEA - meaning that the EA Sports titles will be played on the PlayStation 3 platform.

"For nearly a decade, the EA Sports Challenge Series has represented what our brand is all about - competition and a passion for sports," said Steven Chiang, senior VP at EA Sports. "In partnering with MLG and SCEA, we're going to offer our consumers the chance at competition like they've never had before, at the highest levels of gaming, and with all the bragging rights on the line."

The first event will launch in Dallas, Texas, on August 29-30, with online qualifiers beginning August 17.
