Conservative MP hopeful of UK tax breaks in new government

Vice-chairman of the all-party Parliamentary group believes argument is "strong" for tax incentives

A new Conservative government may be planning to introduce tax breaks for the UK videogames industry, according to comments by MP John Whittingdale - chairman of the House of Commons Select Committee on Culture, Media and Sport and vice-chairman of the new videogame all-party Parliamentary group.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz at the launch of the Play Together initiative between Tiga and NESTA, Whittingdale discussed the question of tax breaks for UK videogames companies, suggesting that the argument for incentives is "a strong one".

"I think the Conservatives have been talking to the industry for some time," he said. "And they are pretty much sympathetic to the arguments, so you know maybe there's good change to come."

Pressed on whether he thought a new Conservative government would introduce tax breaks if it won the next general election he added: "Oh yes, well I would certainly hope so. I mean I'm not a front bench spokesman but I think it's a strong case."
