Best Buy to expand own-brand electronics range

US retailer also slashes prices of selected PS3 and 360 games to $10 in one-week sale

US games and electronic retailer Best Buy is stepping up its efforts to catch specialist chain GameStop by increasing its emphasis on own-brand hardware and offering a selection of next-gen games titles for just USD 10 over the next week.

According to the company's financial records it saw sales of private-label electronics goods, including GPS systems, hi-def radio receivers and digital picture frames, soar by 40 per cent in the past year, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Meanwhile its Insignia and Dynex range of flat-screen TVs saw their market share more than double from 2.3 per cent to 4.9 per cent.

Additionally the weekend saw the launch of an aggressive sale of next-gen videogames titles, with games for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 slashed to just USD 10 for this week only.

Among those titles included in the sale are Rock Band (minus peripherals), Soul Calibur IV, Devil May Cry 4, Condemned 2 and 007: Quantum of Solace.

Best Buy's share price closed on Friday down 0.58 per cent at USD 39.27.
