Battlefield Heroes hits 2 million users

EA marks the milestone by releasing new content for its free-to-play online shooter

Electronic Arts has revealed that its online third-person shooter, Battlefield Heroes, has passed the 2 million user mark.

The game, a free-to-play web-based title that's a radical departure from the publisher's business models to-date, will also receive new content next week in a release entitled "Heroes of the Fall".

"Along with this new map, 'Heroes of the Fall' includes a slew of changes including upgrades of the Gunner class and improvements to the friends system," said Ben Cousins, GM of the Battlefield Heroes team. "We've also added a brand new ranking system for the game - players can earn cool new titles for their heroes as they play - showing everyone on the battlefield how dedicated they are."

Battlefield Heroes originally went live last year in a closed beta phase, while this was officially opened up earlier this year. Following the full release in June EA announced that over 1 million players had registered in the first four weeks.
