Activision apologises for Tony Hawk blunder

Farce as a PR company releases "erroneous information" and Activision refuses to clarify release details

Activision's PR company in the UK has apologised for a marketing blunder which claimed the upcoming release of Tony Hawk: RIDE would be exclusive to the Xbox 360 in the UK.

This morning Frank PR informed the press the game would be exclusive to Microsoft, with Activision's internal PR representatives also confirming the information over the phone.

Later in the day Activision then distanced itself from the initial release, claiming that negotiations were still under way with Microsoft and any exclusive deal was not signed off.

Now, to complicate the matter, Frank PR has issued an apology, claiming the game will be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii, although the company does not clarify whether there will be a period of exclusivity for one format.

Representatives from Frank PR would not add any more detail over the phone, nor would Activision in the UK.

"We apologise for the confusion caused by this morning's mailout," said Frank PR in a statement.

"Further to the erroneous information which was distributed this morning regarding Tony Hawk: RIDE, we would like to clarify that the game is due to be released on the following platforms: Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii."

Chatter amongst the games industry is suggesting the game may be a timed exclusive for Xbox 360 in Europe, allowing for more time to manufacture the bundled skateboard peripheral when it eventually releases on Wii and PS3 at a later date - and that Frank PR may have jumped the gun by announcing the deal before E3 in June.
