Sony Online Entertainment launches scholarship competition

Sony Online Entertainment is offering USD 10,000 to the winner of a scholarship competition designed to encourage more women into the field of videogame production.

The selected student will win the cash towards tuition as well as a ten week internship at one of Sony Online Entertainment's studios located in the US.

"We're just trying to encourage more women to make the games they obviously enjoy playing” commented Torrie Dorrell, senior vice president of Global Sales and Marketing for SOE.

"With the application process starting today, we're taking a concrete step towards opening the door a little wider for women who want to go into game development, and that can only help expand our industry's audience."

A recent survey by SOE showed that 61 per cent of female students enrolled in Art Institutes schools believe that male dominance in the industry is a deterrent to women pursuing a career in gaming.

Last month the Entertainment Software Association established a USD 45,000 scholarship fund for women and minorities, with the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences also offering a similar scheme in the US.
