500m Facebook sign-ups

Social network boasts 100m new users in the last six months, and 26m from UK

Leading social network Facebook has reached 500 million users.

100 million of these arrived in the last year, and 26 million of the total userbase is based in the UK.

Former rival MySpace now sits at 65 million users, while estimates put Twitter at 200 million, according to the BBC.

Social network gaming has risen hand-in-hand with Facebook, with Zynga in particular claiming over 230 million monthly users. FarmVille alone was attracting 83 million users in March, while June's follow-up FrontierVille mustered 20 million users in just over a month.

However, Zynga - and other social game developers - are increasingly experimenting with existence beyond Facebook. Zynga recently picked up a $100 million investment from Google, and the company has previously inked deals with Yahoo.
