Nintendo and Microsoft unite against Sony with Minecraft cross-platform play

"Better together" say newfound allies in the face on Sony's cross-platform reluctance

Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch features cross-play with Microsoft platforms, the publisher confirmed this week.

In a clear jab at Sony's increasingly defiant stance against cross-platform play, a new trailer for Minecraft on Nintendo's YouTube channel shows players on both the Switch and Xbox playing together online, and even features the Xbox logo.

Perhaps lacking subtlety, the stark contrast of Xbox green and Nintendo red appearing side-by-side in a trailer -- accompanied by the slogan "better together" -- does at least make its point clearly.

Sony is clinging to power as the dominant market leader this console generation, but a recent spate of cross-platform missteps by the firm has attracted the ire of fans.

Most recently was the revelation that Fortnite accounts created on PlayStation 4 could not be logged into the Switch version of the game.

As Sony doubles down on keeping it's platform closed -- offering a tepid response to the Fortnite debacle -- Nintendo and Microsoft are shaping a narrative as "the good guys" on this issue.

Both Microsoft and Nintendo spoke out against Sony's position on Fortnite accounts with Xbox head Phil Spencer saying it "doesn't feel like it helps the consumers" and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime offering a similar sentiment.
