Nintendo's mascot racing title becomes fastest-selling Wii U title to date

Mario Kart 8 is off to a turbo start, as Nintendo today announced the Wii U-exclusive racing game has sold 1.2 million copies worldwide in its first weekend, making it the fastest-selling Wii U game to date. The game launched in Japan on May 29, and across Europe and the Americas May 30.

Despite the strong start, Mario Kart 8 has a long way to go to catch up with its predecessors, as previous entries in the series combined to sell more than 100 million copies. The last console installment, Mario Kart Wii, was also the most successful in franchise history, selling 35.53 million copies to date. Even the least successful, Mario Kart: Super Circuit on the Game Boy Advance, sold 5.91 million copies over its lifespan.

Nintendo is banking on Mario Kart 8 in a big way. The Wii U has struggled to gain sales traction, and the company has said it expects the racing game, along with the upcoming Super Smash Bros. Wii U title, to drive system sales this year. Nintendo has also tried sweetening the deal in North America and Europe, offering a free Wii U game to those who register a copy of Mario Kart 8 in the launch window.

I was surprised how generous Nintendo handled the free game promotion, the games were not only top notch, but owners of a premium Wii U even received the Deluxe DIgital Promotion points for their free game, so that they end up with an additional 5$/ eShop credit code.
If you went full digital on Mario Kart 8 here in europe, you were able to buy Super Mario Kart on the Virtual Console back in March for 7.99 just to buy Mario Kart 8 on the eShop with a 7.99 discount, qualify for a free game and end up with points woth 10 eShop credit (points for Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 8 and the free game).

Great News for Nintendo! I hope that they can increase Wii U sales! Loving the game so far, lovely visuals, gameplay and online! Nintendo NEED more games like this releasing, I mean the last major release on the Wii U was DK: Tropical Freeze and that was over 3 months ago! I hope this can push Wii U sales and I hope to receive a release date for X, Hyrule Warriors and Baynoetta 2 at E3 next week (Fingers Crossed).

They're still going to have to sell to a massive percent of their user base to not be the lowest selling Mario Kart. Nintendo have really pushed their user base to buy this, and buy it quick with the free game deal.

We may see sales slowing down pretty quick
