Pizza arcade chain marks VR headset's first steps into location-based entertainment market

The Oculus Rift hasn't officially been released yet, but the VR headset is already receiving its first consumer-facing applications. Chuck E. Cheese has announced that it is using the Rift in a Virtual Ticket Blaster Experience, trying out the tech at birthday parties booked at 29 Dallas, San Diego, and Orlando locations over a span of six weeks.

The Virtual Ticket Blaster offers a VR twist on a familiar setup where a person stands in an enclosed booth as wind blows up a flurry of redemption tickets for them to desperately grab at for a set amount of time. Using the same booth and an Oculus Rift with 360-degree head tracking, players attempt to lineup crosshairs with virtual tickets in the booth. The system registers how many tickets were collected and players will be able to redeem them at the merchandise counter.

"Kids today have unprecedented access to game consoles and tablets," said CEC Entertainment president Roger Cardinale. "Our challenge is to deliver an experience not available at home, and there is no doubt virtual reality does just that. Oculus Rift technology is the next frontier in the gaming industry, and we're thrilled to be able to say it's part of the Chuck E. Cheese's lineup."

Have they considered using the Rift for the parents, so they can pretend they're not in a Chuck E. Cheese?

Sorry GamesIndustry.biz - a little late to the game (one CEC press release does not make a parade). This is a "test" system and is one of over four different Family Entertainment venues that have developed or housed VR based attractions. Including companies such as HBO and Dave & Buster's.

Hey, but as you guys at GamesIndustry.biz do not think the Digital Out-of-Home Entertainment (DOE) sector is "your bag - or worth you covering" - we can see how you will make these kind of mistakes :)

Hopefully the VR developers will work out the (sometime) motion sickness side effect.
Pizza and motion sickness is not a good combination.

Pizza, motion sickness and kids/adults who may not wash their hands before mucking up those goggles are an even worse combination. Mark my words, if this goes live and gets put in more places, within two years I'm laying five cents on a conjunctivitis outbreak at a few Chuck E. Cheeses and other locations where underpaid employees fail to upkeep the equipment, people just step up and slap those goggles on and there are no reminders posted near each unit that they need to be handled with care and sanitized between uses. It's a good thing I avoid places like these (although I did have some of that somewhat generic tasting pizza once thanks to someone bringing two pies to a party. Blech.)
