PS4 sales top 7 million

Sony's console has shifted 1.7 million units in two months

The PlayStation 4 is maintaining its comfortable lead over the Xbox One, passing 7 million units sold after less than six months.

Sony confirmed that figure as correct as of April 6, 2014, by which time 20.5 million units of PlayStation 4 software had also been sold. The console is now available in a total of 72 countries and regions all over the world.

"The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage," said Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, in a statement. "We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months."

The last official sales update from Sony was on February 8, at which point the PlayStation 4 had sold 5.3 million units.
