Atlus parent company seeking buyer - report

Sources claim that $150m auction will start next week

The bankrupt parent company of Persona-developer Atlus is said to be planning on auction for a buyer some time next week.

According to a report from Bloomberg, which cites two people with knowledge of the proceedings, Index is looking for around 15 billion ($150m/98m) in the sale. That would exclude the 24.5 billion ($245m/160m) in debt that the drove the company into bankruptcy. Index wishes to finalise an agreement by September.

Atlus is just one part of the Index Corporation, which owns companies in the film, anime and mobile communications industries.

The extent of the problems facing the company became apparent last month, when it announced it was filing for bankruptcy. This immediately followed an investigation by Japan's Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission over the falsification of its financial reports.

Ugh. I come home from one actual funeral to an almost one here. Hopefully things will go well with this sale, as I can't see a new world without Atlus games in it working very well for some gamers...

I'm very skeptical of Nintendo buying them because Atlus is also a large publisher. They have a lot of contracts going on with a lot of 3rd parties and even Sony and MS. That's probably something Nintendo doesn't want to touch if they don't have to.

However, Nintendo is in the process of a very large expansion with the construction of their new R&D facility. A major purchase may go a long way to quickly filling it. Nintendo also seems to buy at least one new developer every generation (Rare, Silicon Knights, Retro, Monolith Software). They are due. Though I was really hoping they'd have saved Vigil Games when they had the chance and rolled it into Retro (both being Austin, Texas based).

Well, Nintendo buying Atlus would make that Wii U full of exclusives, that's for sure. That said, I wonder how a new Shin Megami Tensei Persona game would do as a Wii-U only title and would PlayStation-only gamers who may have bought a 3DS for some of those SMT games and other RPGs also make that commitment to buying a new home console just for this series and its spin-offs?

Eh, speculation sucks. We'll see...

No doubt they'd get a nice bump in exclusive content but I just don't think publishers ever show up on their purchase intention radar.
