Julie Larson-Green may take over all hardware engineering at Microsoft

Microsoft senior vice president and Windows head Julie Larson-Green may add the duties of departing Interactive Entertainment president Don Mattrick to her own, according to a report by Bloomberg. The report states that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer may give Larson-Green control over all hardware engineering within the company including the Xbox One, Surface, and Windows Phone lines. Microsoft corporate vice president and Windows Phone software head Terry Myerson would pick up the slack, taking on some Windows operating system responsibilities.

Larson-Green took control of the company's Windows business in November of last year, after the departure of Windows president Steven Sinofsky.

While Microsoft completes its reorganization, Mattrick's former team is reporting directly to Ballmer. Sources also told Bloomberg that Mattrick was the one who would have controlled Microsoft's hardware engineering if he hadn't left for Zynga.

Anyone remember when the Xbox division was run by people who were passionate about games and not just thought of as another content delivery system? Content delivery on a games console used to be a bonus, now the gaming seems to be background noise to what is entirely thought of as another way to deliver Microsoft's new, completely fragmented ecosystem to us.

I still think MS & Xbox as a brand would benefit from selling two versions of the XO, one gaming orientated device and one for anyone who may want to wave at an XO in their lounge to change the tv channel over... If Julie Larson-Green can get that sorted she'll be onto a winner, instead of going down the route of forcing every XO owner to have features they don't want and won't use... Lets hope she has more sense than the person she may be replacing..

Maybe even add a third version, and sell an XO without the Kinect for those who don't want one (and those who are worried about being spied on ;-) )..

I think gaming is still a focus for the management and division it's just less of the whole focus than it was to begin with - which is fine because that's true for both Sony and Nintendo as well. The business has grown and the capabilities of the consoles have widened. There were two problems from my point of view in MS' strategy so far: 1) They have been marketing the wrong features to the wrong audiences with the XBO and 2) They hadn't finalised (or were near finalising) their offering thus resulting in confused messaging and a nebulous feature set.

e.g. Marketing TV pass-through to core (and core doesn't mean hardcore but constant gamers/hobbyists) gamers and press who are more interested in games and already have devices that perform these tasks or have already "cut the cable" and moved on to internet streaming as their primary passive entertainment delivery medium.
Or even not being sure as to what is being offered with information changing from one representative to the next and even from the same representative between interviews - with the industry claiming no knowledge of their plans (though no idea how true this is!!).

In retrospect it felt like MS were unprepared to show the XBO at the point in time that they did and this has cost them. If they could have skipped E3 and had a better presenation a month later with everything being more solidified that may have been the better option.

I feel they were more than ready to present their machine – it was that they needed more time to get ALL the media and the trade on-board regarding the 'story' they were trying to peddle.

The fundamental issues with the Xbone are to do with the arrogance and assumptions that a questionable management team has made over what a consumer base 'needs' – and in their total lack of gaming understanding and experience; so they have miss-judged the situation and highlighted their ineptitude to run their respective divisions (jumping ship to avoid backlash).

Microsoft Interactive Entertainment Business (MIEB) division says what it dose on the side of the tin – for Mr. Mattrick to steer this division down the road of heavy investment into home theater, television sports agreements and a dedicated DRM approach, without an incredibly strong game story, is like taking a knife to a gun fight, with regards E3.

As stated previously about missing -

As with the 1993 3DO débâcle – a management mindset of not understanding the 'game biz', but feeling that they were great business executives and anything they did was great! Has been fuelled by a job-for-the-boys and cult-of-personality approach that sees executives think they are worth $10m salaries while trampling over talented staff.

That same attitude made an executive feel he could sell a non-game business plan at a E3 press event forgetting that the event would not just be decided by the paid-for journo's and fanboys they were wining and dining in the tent, but also by the crowds of real people watching outside the tent! An attitude that sees executives say “deal with it” if you question their (lack of) vision!

An attitude of hype and ego that has permeated the modern game trade again. We are at a point where the 'Emperors New Clothes' syndrome is about to have a gaming generation turn round and shout, “...hey those guys are naked!” Just ask Nintendo!
