Nintendo and the 3DS are familiar victors in a slow week for releases

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon retained the top spot in Japan last week thanks to a barren release schedule that offered little competition.

According to data from Media Create, published by Gematsu, sales of Nintendo's celebrated 3DS release have dropped from more than 390,000 units on its launch week to 68,423 units. However, it was enough to secure a number one finish in a week that saw only one new release hit the top 20: Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge on the PlayStation 3, which entered at number 15 with 9,659 sales.

Nintendo and the 3DS also took second place with Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which shifted 49,140 units to hit more than 3 million in lifetime sales.

This was reflected in the supremacy of the 3DS in the hardware charts. In a week where every platform lost momentum, the 3DS XL and the 3DS took first and second place with 34,180 sales and 22,684 sales respectively. The biggest loser of the week was the PlayStation Vita, which slumped by almost 13,000 sales to finish the week on 19,328 units.

Luigi sold 100k last week. This is release week 3. First vita week without a big release and that drop is a bit worrying.

Vita returns below 20K, but slower than I predicted. Sony's price drop was timed impeccably with a number of major software releases, but further releases of that magnitude are months away from Vita now. The new norm will still be lower than this.

Wii U sees a sharp fall too, and will almost surely be back to its 10K per week sales.
