Sony's House wants female devs on PS4

“Not going down the route of making the console pink" to attract female gamers

Sony Computer Entertainment's president and chief executive Andrew House has spoken briefly about how the company plans to make the new PlayStation 4 console more attractive to female and casual gamers.

"We are not going down the route of making the console pink of course," he told The Sun.

"I think the key is to have people - and increasingly women - with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot 'em up games."

He also suggested that the touchpad on the consoles controller would make it a more attractive platform for casual games.

"The key is getting games developers - who are going to make the next Angry Birds - excited about the PS4. And they are."

Recently the consoles lead system architect, Mark Cerny, also explained how this time around Sony had built a much more developer friendly machine.

Well, there is an alarming trend of thinking that dumbing down something and making it pink is a way to attract women. There are so many pink and dumbed down things that one starts to think that may be because the people making the products don't have any idea of any other way to attract women.

The dumbest one I have seen, outside of the industry was a pen. It was no different from any other pen by the same manufacturer, except for being pink. And that, apparently was what was making it a "pen for ladies". The ads said something like "Hey, look, ladies, we've made this pen bright pink! It is special for you!".

I think his point was that they want to make sure that women's point of view is being taken in consideration, rather than following the trend of just assuming that women like frilly things and making their own console pink.

My interpretation, of course...

Begs the question Why Not? It can't be THAT expensive to make a specific colored console. You sell various colors ALL the time, different brands and special editions. Why just talk like you want to do something, DO something. I'd probably get one as well.

The point isn't the colour of the console.
Of course having different colours isn't a bad thing per se.

The point is "Doing something MORE than just making the console pink", meaning, actually hiring women, let them express their opinion and take decision, make sure that the content is appealing for women, too.
And making pink and glittery games and pink and glittery consoles is neiter the best, nor the only way to make a product that appeals women. Actually, it gets annoying after a while.

So far, "making it pink" has been a normal approach - a really stupid approach, but the usual one.

For example: Bic for Her How did I ever cope without a pink biro?

In a similar vein, anyone remember "Science! It's a girl thing!" We should like science because it's like nail polish!
