Or beat God Of War III's sales on the UK software chart

Kratos might be a demigod, but God Of War Ascension still couldn't knock Tomb Raider off the top of the UK charts this week or match up to the success of previous titles in the series.

The PlayStation exclusive only managed to enter the chart at 2, and failed to match even half the sales of God Of War III, released in 2010. It did manage the second biggest week 1 of the series, beating 2007's God of War II.

There were new entries at 3, for Blizzard's Starcraft II expansion Heart Of The Swarm and at 4 for Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, beating its predecessors which have never climbed higher than 8. Despite a tricky launch and continued controversy over its offline capabilities, SimCity managed to hang on to a top five position.

I honestly think people could have waited a bit more for a God of War 4 on PS4, take that money and development time to develope a full fledged sequal, rather than a half assed one. The game could really have been more than it had the writing, online and characterization been a bit more fleshed out.

I assume they started work after GoW 3 was finished. Sure at that point they didnt know what the PS4 hardware and features would be. People need to work on something you cant have them sit around and wait for new hardware and just pay them.

I would have preferred a GoW launch title, but I can understand why they made Ascension. Its still a good game.

Dont remember what games came out in the GoW3 launch month but March is really packed with a high amount of great games.

So far GoW is a pretty fun farewell game for the PS3. If they can make some improvements for GoW 4 then it'll be another hit for Santa Monica.

Plus TOMB RAIDER really was an impressive game for CD and fans of the series.

So SimCity still sold enough to remain in the top 5 even with three new entries, this is why EA ignores all the forum chatter. It ultimately means nothing if people don't actually make the same noise with their wallets.
Look at this list, EA is successful and will continue to do business as they do until something changes, it seems most people are happy (more than a third of the top 15 titles are published by EA): 5. SimCity, 6. FIFA 13, 8. Crysis 3, 10. The Sims: UL, 14. Need for Speed, 15. Dead Space 3.

I can't understand why they made Ascension. Well, I can... money, but it's not a game anyone was asking for. They need to take a risk, make a new character, and change up the gameplay some. We're on the 6th God of War game in 8 years since the franchise began, all with the same gameplay. It's time for some change.

Does this mean Lara is more manly than Kratos?

Kratos is a mass murder i rely dont like that kind of game..
I playd GoW 3 and stopt playing after i had to kill a defencles naked women to open a switch. Im sad this game sells so well.
I hope Lara is a bit longer in the top charts its a great game even if story and gameplay is off sync.

Sadly God of War is tired.

When speculation began about this game there were several people speaking of the potential to use different characters and different mythologies as a way of taking the series forward and making things incredibly interesting. This didn't happen and we're playing more of the same.

Kratos needn't 'die' but the series could do with a fresh start and some more variety in my opinion. This didn't have to be a PS4 game, just something different. We all love our 'Playstation Exclusives' but there comes a point where you don't want to play the same thing over and over again.

People say that God of War: Ascension doesn't have a purpose or anything new, but to me it seems pretty clear: multiplayer. Some people might not like it, but I think they developed a multiplayer system that they think worked but weren't going to release it by itself. I postulate this since all of the trailers and content for the game lead with multiplayer, this is the new feature they really wanted to push the most, and was probably conceived before the singe-player story. I think there's a good possibility that they'll launch a new IP for the next gen, but we'll see - with these big studios, they can't really sit around long doing nothing, so they'll probably be making some hard decisions soon on what they're going to do next.

More of the same is the reason I bought God of War: Ascension, because more of the same means its more well crafted and polished singleplayer with huge set pieces.

Why did we all want to see Star Wars Episode 1? Because we expected more of the same, same goes with all the Star Trek shows and movies or [insert your favourite franchise here]. Its human nature to like what you are used to. Just look at your food choices I bet a lot will be food you are used to or similar food where you know you will enjoy eating it.

It may be human nature to like what you're used to but its also human nature to get bored of things. Even some of the biggest properties have seen dwindling sales in future outings.

There is a real balance to be made here, and whilst many will have an appetite for a refined meal in GoW Ascension I have a feeling many others will be turned off and that's likely reflected in the sales.

This game could also make an interesting case for demos 'hurting' retail sales which was an interesting article I came across recently - after the demo reaction it could feed into this discussion...

Its only the second full GoW game for PS3 and 3 years after GoW 3 I dont think people are tired of it and rather just think that march and february have been really strong months for game releases and people have only a certain amount of money they can spend on games.

I struggle to free up spar time to play Tomb Raider, GoW, Starcraft HotS and SimCity at the moment with Bioshock soon joining the list. When GoW 3 came out there was only Just Cause 2 and Bad Company 2 as notable game releases and I dont think either of them got sales anywhere near those 4 games recently released.

St Patricks day could also play a role as on that weekend people plan to go out a lot and drink. Lets see how this week goes when people stay at home and suffer from hangovers, maybe they are more in the mood to kill Greek people and monsters. :)
