PS Vita tops Japanese poll's list of systems to buy

64% of gamers say they're looking at buying Sony's handheld in 2013, 3DS in second with 48%

Year one for the PlayStation Vita in Japan was disappointing, but it might be in for a significantly improved year two. According to a CVG report, a Famitsu-conducted poll of Japanese gamers found Sony's handheld the most common response when asked which systems they were considering buying in 2013.

With 64 percent of respondents looking at picking up the Vita, Sony's handheld was the only entrant on the list to break the 50 percent mark. Nintendo's latest handheld, the 3DS, came in second, with 48 percent of Japanese gamers saying it was a purchase they were looking to make this year. The just-released Wii U came in third place, with 34 percent of respondents planning to buy Nintendo's latest console.

The rest of the list was populated by more entrenched and ubiquitous options. The PS3, PC, and Xbox 360 followed with 25 percent, 14 percent, and 11 percent positive responses, respectively. Smartphones were next at 10 percent, but Apple-specific products like the iPad, IPhone, and iPod Touch topped out at 7 percent.

Full methodology for the survey was not disclosed, but 75 percent of the respondents were male.

Really guys? Reporting on a Famitsu poll saying Japanese gamers want a Vita is rather like reporting on a poll conducted by Official Playstation Magazine saying they like the PS3 better than the Wii.

Famitsu has had a noticeable Sony-leaning fanbase and represents a very small fraction of actual Japanese gamers. You don't report on polls conducted by American magazines, so I don't see why you're interested in one conducted by a Japanese magazine. Poor show, GI.

I'd be interested in knowing the time frame of the poll. Was it taken during the time frame the Monster Hunter 4 Vita rumor was going around?

Now that Capcom has denied it and word (also a rumor) is that Nintendo has a 3 year exclusive deal with either MH4 or the entirety of the series, it's not real clear, I'd expect those figures to drop.

You'd also have to wonder if the 10:1 3DS's to Vita's already purchased plays into the responses. Not many people will respond that they plan to purchase something they already own.

It makes more sense that people would want to get a Vita since almost every person in Japan interested in getting a handheld already has 2 3DSs.

Surely it is just a case of the Vita being the least undesirable of the current options.

I'm sure that the install base for the 3DS in Japan has an impact on this. However, people should remember that there's far more brand loyalty for Sony portables (and Sony in general) in Japan than their is in the U.S. - there probably is interest in the system, but the software isn't there to support it yet.

its not just the software, its sony's ass backwards pricing for memory forcing users to pay $100 for a $25 memory card making the system well over $400 to get a premium model.

I would like this say if you add all the percentages up it adds up to 213%, that makes this automatically irrelevant.
As for the vita, my ass 64% people want to buy it, I know of more people that want tablets than this. So smartphone & Apple amount to 17.5% of what users want but vita is 3 times this. Sony fan boys need a slap in the face with reality, no one is buying your junk, no one cares for it, and biggest of all no one is developing for it.

Preet - It's a survey of what devices people are thinking about buying, the percentages don't need to add up to 100 because some people will be intending to buy more than one. Also, it's a Japanese survey of (presumably) core gamers, so it's not surprising Sony and Nintendo hand held gaming devices score so highly.

I don't believe for a minute that we're suddenly going to see a massive upswing in Vita sales this year on the scale this survey seems to suggest. But I don't understand why some people in this industry seem to hate Sony so much and want them to fail. Less competition is bad.
