The retail chain is looking to make DLC purchasers easier for consumers

Gamestop is ready to launch a new system that allows consumers to purchase and download downloadable content (DLC) for Xbox 360 titles in store. Currently, when a user buys DLC, they received a code that can be redeemed on their home consoles. GameStop president Tony Bartel told Wired that the new system would bypass that step.

"There was a lot of friction about putting in a [25-digit] code… with a controller," Bartel told Wired.

The system will send an email after users purchase the content in store. By using their smartphone and clicking on that link, users can begin the download process on their consoles. The new system is GameStop-exclusive and while it only works with Xbox 360 content, Bartel sees it moving to other platforms in the future.

"It's GameStop-specific, and it works with any code," he says of the system. "We can take any of our partners and put them on our platform."

So wait... I can sit on my sofa and download what I want or I can go to GameStop across town and download what I want there and take it home again?

Even if you struggle with a controller virtual keyboard it is going to be easier and faster to redeem a code. Heck, most of the time you don't even have a code you just select "PURCHASE" and away you go.

Respect to GameStop for trying but you can already copy and paste codes from an email in to www.xbox.com and it'll download on your console when you next turn it on. So what service are they actually offering?

@Barrie, I suppose this is aimed at parents who don't actually use the console themselves and want to buy stuff for their kids. Or for people who don't have a credit card entered in their system, for whatever reason.

Nevertheless I agree with you, this seems a bit silly when you consider how easier it is to download directly on the console :) Retail chains will do whatever they can to survive the digital revolution.

If you REALLY hate entering codes with a controller, a $5-10 usb keyboard will permanently do the trick too.

Of course, if you don't have a smartphone or broadband, you're screwed either way...

As Corey pointed out, you can use a USB keyboard on the Xbox, if you have one for a pc already you can save that few quid as well. Or you can activate the content on your PC via the Xbox website so it downloads when you next turn it on.
