World of Warcraft film loses Raimi as director

Sam Raimi has confirmed that he's no longer working on the Warcraft film

At a press conference for his upcoming film, Oz: The Great and Powerful, director Sam Raimi confirmed that he is no longer directing the film adaptation of World of Warcraft.

"Actually, they don't have me directing World of Warcraft anymore because when I took the Oz job, they had to move on to another director," Raimi told CraveOnline when asked about the project. "They had to start making it."

Activision Blizzard has made no mention of beginning production on the film, or which director has stepped up to helm the project.

And why are we getting a WoW film anyway? What, they're trying to out spend the folks making Defiance by saying "They have a TV show... WE have a movie!" Eh, whatever. I hear Uwe Boll is free these days, so they may as well Dungeon Siege it up before he tackles a new project...

A few years back a WoW movie would be a good idea. But now the fire is gone and I don't really think it makes any sense (from a commercial point of view) to release a flick about that game.

Pretty sure it will never get out of production hell though...

It could make a pretty cool CGI movie I think, but I definitely agree that the ship probably sailed for this one a good year or so back.

Speaking of which, I wonder what happened with the Metal Gear Solid movie too...

@Terence: It was out before MGS. It's called Escape from New York lol.

Snake Plissken came from Escape from New York haha. Look, attitude, everything.

Although I would like to see a movie based entirely on the MGS universe... cause that would be pretty awesome.

I doubt we will ever see a movie here unless they go all out CGI route and tell and independent WOW story. With the more than bad history of game to movie adaptations I think we're better off without it.

I'm still waiting for the Halo live action movie... Hell, they had the Warthog there at the Microsoft booth for Halo 4 at E3 this year. That thing was custom built from the ground up, somehow I think there's more to spending that much money to just make it for the live action trailer for Halo Reach, but that's just me.

@Joshua "I'm still waiting for the Halo live action movie.."
It's in progres, I've heard. And they finally saw the potential in the creators of District 9 (Neill Blomkamp/ Peter Jackson) wich they refused to do the project in the first place (before the relaease of District).

Back to topic: A bit of fun and a bit of gore would have been perfect for a Wow movie. Sam Raimi has all of that in his blood. But as many others said: Do we really need a Wow movie?
