First UK retail location due to open in March next year following launch of online store this summer

Microsoft is planning to launch its own retail store in London in March next year, The Verge reports.

The information was leaked by "sources familiar with the company's plans." The retail store will open in March 2013, following the launch of an online store later this summer.

The company revealed plans to open 75 stores over the next two years at its Worldwide Partner Conference. Microsoft currently has 19 stores - mainly in North America - but the London launch will mark its entry into UK retail.

The rumour is lent credence by the fact that Microsoft became officially incorporated in the UK in March - a necessary step for establishing a retail location in the country.

While Apple stores have plenty of flashy goods to expose, I wonder what Microsoft is going to put on display. I'm no expert there, but aside of mice and keyboards I can't think of many products. Xbox... hmm... a lot of software boxes...

MS actually have quite a few product lines, peripherals, game controllers, operating systems, Office, Xbox, Kinect etc.

I imagine they'll also have high end PCs, laptops, tablets and phones by partnering with hardware manufacturers.

Not forgetting Surface as well, assuming it doesn't do a Zune on us non-Americans!

Yeah but software aside, you can't really fill a store with Xbox, especially if you consider the console is getting old and the new one is far from being released. Phones and other devices are just generic hardware running a copy of Windows. Apple stores on the other hand are a sort of temple where everything you see has an apple logo on it. I'm trying to figure out what a Microsoft store might look like, but I can't help thinking about Fnac.
