Camera tech gets boost in Japan as new site offers cards to download

Sony is hoping to push the use of the camera technology in its Vita handheld with a new initiative called AR Play, launching in Japan on June 28.

The push will see three free games appear for download on the PSN Store: Table Play Soccer, Cliff Diving and Fireworks. Alongside those games, cards will be available to download and print out from the drive's website, reports Andriasang.

The move is an attempt to encourage both players and developers to see the potential of augmented reality titles and to push the tech to the fore in more titles. So far, the biggest success to make use of the camera-based tech is the PSP's Invizimals, from Spanish studio Novorama, which was 2009's third best selling PSP title.

I dont care for it. Might as well take a photograph and use it as a backround for the game.

It's not having the background of your table as the game that makes it a nice gimmick but the fact that you can zoom in a part of the game or turn around to see another part of the pitch that's the fascinating things about AR on the PSVita. It has got nothing to do with AR in PSP which was exactly as you described it the PSvita throughly pushes AR to a new limit
